{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.warren.senate.gov?p=press_release&id=283", "Senator Warren Asks CFPB Director Cordray About Agency's Efforts on Veterans Scams, Car Loans [press_release]", "2013-11-12", "2013", "2013-11", "Democrat", "House", "MA", "Elizabeth Warren", "W000817", "www.warren.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Washington, DC\u00a0\u2013 At a Senate Banking Committee hearing today, United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) asked Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray about the agency\u2019s efforts to protect older veterans from financial scams and to combat auto loan scams.\u00a0\n\u00a0\nSenator Warren asked about scams targeting the Department of Veterans Affairs\u2019 \u201caid and attendance benefit,\u201d which helps pay for the cost of nursing homes and in-home health aides for disabled veterans. \u201cThe aid and attendance benefit is a significant way that we show our veterans our appreciation,\u201d said Senator Warren. \u201cAnd these scams are turning a benefit into something that actually undermines the financial security of our older veterans.\u201d\n\u00a0\nRecently,\u00a0Senator Warren held\u00a0roundtable discussions\u00a0in Boston and Lowell\u00a0with CFPB\u00a0Office of Servicemember Affairs Director Holly Petraeus on financial issues facing servicemembers, veterans, and their families.\n\u00a0\nDuring today's hearing, Senator Warren also questioned Director Cordray about protections for consumers purchasing cars.\u00a0She explained that auto dealers act as intermediaries between car buyers and financial institutions when the buyer is looking for a loan,\u00a0and all too often, charge consumers a higher interest rate than the quote they received from the financial\u00a0institution while pocketing the difference.\u00a0 Although the CFPB has authority to regulate nearly every kind of consumer loan, there is a loophole for car loans.\n\u00a0\nSenator Warren highlighted a recent Bipartisan Policy Center report recommending Congress close this loophole to give the CFPB authority to take actions that would protect families from being cheated on car loans. \u201cI think the CFPB has done great work, and great work in this area as best it can,\u201d said Senator Warren. \u201cBut it makes no sense to me that there should be any exception here for consumers who are being tricked out of billions of dollars every year on car loans.\u201d\n\u00a0\nVideo of Senator Warren\u2019s Q&A at today\u2019s hearing is available\u00a0here.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.warren.senate.gov?p=press_release&id=283"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.075949054211378, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
