Ron Wyden\u2019s efforts to\u00a0fund and\u00a0pass county payments\u00a0for one more\u00a0year. The decision will leave cash-strapped Oregon counties with\u00a0little\u00a0money to fund law-enforcement, schools and roads.\r\n\u201cRural Oregonians deserve better than to have politics put on hold this essential lifeline for funding roads, firefighters and schools,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cI will not stop fighting for Oregon\u2019s rural counties. I\u2019ll be back at it when Congress returns\u00a0in January.\u201d\r\nMore than 700 counties in 41 states receive Secure Rural Schools funding. Last year, Oregon counties received more than $107 million through the Secure Rural Schools\u00a0program\u00a0and more than $17 million from Payments in Lieu of Taxes\u00a0(PILT).\u00a0 It appears that PILT may be funded, but Secure Rural Schools remains on the cutting room floor.\r\nUnless Republican leaders change their stance, counties will be forced to close jails and libraries, leading to fresh layoffs in the communities that can least afford to lose jobs and essential public services. \u00a0\r\nWyden authored the Secure Rural Schools and County Self-Determination Act with Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, in 2000, and successfully renewed it several times, most recently last year.
