Additionally, our internal analysis has shed light on the gaps in the federal government's oversight, resulting in fraud, waste, and abuse of our nation's Medicare program and American taxpayer dollars.\r\n\r\nFull text of the letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar can be foundHERE.\r\n\r\nThis letter is part of the ongoing Finance Committee investigation into the conduct of the nation's organ donation and procurement system. In February, the members sent anexpansive requestfor information and data to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which was contracted by Congress nearly four decades ago to oversee the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). The response from UNOS can be foundHERE. Following the letter, Senator Youngintroduced theLost Opportunities to Supply Transplantable Organs(LOST Organs)Actto help prevent lifesaving organs from getting lost in transport.\r\n\r\nLast year, Senator Youngwrote a letter to Health and Human Services Acting Inspector General (HHS OIG) Joanne Chiedirequesting a comprehensive examination of the adequacy of the organ procurement and transplantation system in the United States. In July 2019, Senator Young introduced legislation to deliver more life-saving organs to patients by establishing clear, accountable metrics for organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and spoke about the billon the Senate floor.In an op-ed forThe Hill,Senator Young outlined the need for his legislation to bring greater transparency, oversight, and accountability to the nation's organ donation system. In December 2019,HHS announced proposed rulesto adopt performance measures similar to Senator Young's bill.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, theWashington Postpublished a reporthighlighting Senator Young's efforts.\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t  \n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t \n\t\t\n\t\t\tPrint\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tEmail\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tTweet\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t \n\t\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n    \n\t\n\t\n    \n    \n    \n    \t\n    \t\n\t    \t  \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tPrevious Article", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.young.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/young-grassley-finance-committee-members-continue-investigation-into-us-organ-transplant-system"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.0576979257166386, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
