{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.young.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/young-we-must-stand-with-israel-oppose-antisemitism/", "Young: We Must Stand with Israel, Oppose Antisemitism", "2023-10-18", "2023", "2023-10", "Republican", "Senate", "IN", "Todd Young", "Y000064", "www.young.senate.gov", "toddyoung", "https://www.young.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/", "scraper", "**Click here or above to watch Senator Young\u2019s floor speech.**\n\nWASHINGTON \u2013 U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.), lead Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, today spoke on the Senate floor about the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel, why the United States must support the Israeli people, and the importance of denouncing antisemitism.\n\n\u201cAt the core of Hamas burns an age-old sickness: antisemitism\u2026The worldview of Hamas must be added to the roll call of evil ideologies that failed to destroy the Jewish people\u2026We must also stand vigilant against and always oppose antisemitism,\u201d said Senator Young.\n\nTo watch the full floor speech, click here.\n\nSenator Young\u2019s full remarks, as delivered:\n\nThroughout their history, the children of Israel have known persecution and sorrow.\n\nThey have lived in exile and enslavement.\n\nThey have faced bigotry and violence.\n\nEntire nations and civilizations have sought to extinguish them and vanished, but the Jewish people remain.\n\nAnd against all odds, millions of their descendants gathered together in the Holy Land and founded a nation.\n\nToday, Israel is a vibrant democracy in the Middle East and a strong ally of the United States of America.\n\nMany people of faith would say the existence and perseverance of the State of Israel is itself evidence of divine Providence.\n\nYet even today, even today, Israel faces existential threats.\n\nOn October 7, Hamas terrorists carried out the worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust.\n\nThe slaughter of 1,400 people\u2026the decapitation of babies\u2026the execution of grandmothers\u2026and the taking of nearly 200 hostages, including children, women, seniors, and American citizens.\n\nThirty Americans were among the murdered. Thirty Americans. Many of our fellow citizens have friends and family in Israel.\n\nRegardless of our faith, we are all, I know, heartbroken for the loss, sickened by the cruelty.\n\nAnd on behalf of the Hoosiers I represent, I want to express my deepest condolences to the people of Israel as they mourn and pray and bury the dead.\n\nAs it has since its founding, against alliances of far larger nations and armies, this country \u2013 which is four times smaller than Indiana \u2013 will defend itself.\n\nAnd America will be here for Israel and support its right to confront this violence, this barbarism.\n\nWe will do this because our values are the same \u2013 dedication to liberty and order, to tolerance and human dignity.\n\nThe days ahead will be difficult.\n\nAs members of this body know too well, Israel is still under threat, and the risk of additional fronts opening up is real.\n\nOver the past several days, I\u2019ve been heartened by the strong, bipartisan support in the United States Senate for the people of Israel.\n\nDuring this time of peril, this body cannot succumb to isolationism; we cannot abandon Israel any more than we can abandon our friends in Ukraine or Taiwan.\n\nOn urgent matters of national security, we are stronger when we stand together.\n\nAnd in the difficult days ahead, we will work to support the people of Israel. I know we will continue that spirit.\n\nRelatedly, I call on the Biden Administration to consult and closely work with Congress to quickly fulfill \u2013 quickly fulfill \u2013 any urgent Israeli requests for assistance and do all we can to fully support Israel.\n\nNow colleagues, the Constitution of the United States lays out our responsibilities.\n\nCongress has an important Constitutional role in determining how the United States will respond to any additional acts of aggression.\n\nAs we support and stand with our allies, we also must be crystal clear about what has happened.\n\nThe attacks on the people of Israel orchestrated by Hamas were barbaric, depraved, they were evil.\n\nLong supported by the Iranian regime, Hamas\u2019 stated mission is to destroy the Jewish people.\n\nThat\u2019s right, at the core of Hamas burns an age-old sickness: antisemitism.\n\nIt was the twisted inspiration for their massacre. This broken thinking, this horrific ideology, liberates not a single life.\n\nInstead, tragically it will cost only more, including those of innocent Palestinian civilians.\n\nFor the past 15 years, many peace-keeping Palestinians in Gaza have had their lives upended and exploited by the Hamas terrorist group.\n\nWe acknowledge their suffering. We hope for change.\n\nThose in our media, on our college campuses, or even those serving in government who ascribe the actions of Hamas to anything else other than hatred\u2026\n\n\u2026those who are so quick to decry injustices elsewhere but place murder and rape in some sort of perspective\n\n\u2026those who provide context for savagery\u2026\n\n\u2026those who sigh that \u201cboth sides are guilty\u201d\u2026\n\nTo all of you, I say you are providing cover for monsters.\n\nThe worldview of Hamas must be added to the roll call of evil ideologies that failed to destroy the Jewish people.\n\nAnd that is why we must stand with Israel. But that alone is not enough.\n\nThe murder of thousands of Jews brought reminders of the Holocaust, and echoes of Russian pogroms, and so many centuries of trials and tragedies.\n\nSo, we must also stand vigilant against and always oppose antisemitism, wherever it appears, whatever movement it is attached to, whatever banner it marches underneath.\n\nIn these difficult days, we echo the old prayer sung across synagogues for the Jewish people:\n\n\u201cMay God have mercy on them and remove them from distress to relief, from darkness to light, from subjugation to redemption, now, speedily, and soon.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T18:43:12Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.young.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/young-we-must-stand-with-israel-oppose-antisemitism/"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4906248543411493, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
