Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in commemoration of this year’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims:

“Today, we remember the lives of loved ones lost in road crashes all over the world. These devastating accidents are often sudden, traumatic events that leave family members, friends, and communities asking themselves how such tragedies could have been avoided.

“In October 2005, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for governments to mark the third Sunday in November of each year as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Have Roads that are Safe for All,’ reminding us of the critical need for safer highway infrastructure and sustainable urban planning to keep everyone out of harm when driving, biking, or walking on the street. Road safety is a shared responsibility that concerns everyone, including government, industry, non-governmental organizations, international agencies, and everyday citizens.

“From 2006 to 2010, an average of 37,600 Americans lost their lives every year on our nation’s roads. First responders and medical professionals are to be commended for their tireless dedication to treat the injuries of accident victims. Fortunately, we have seen the number of traffic deaths continue to decline due to improved road safety programs, yet we can all take greater steps to help reduce road traffic deaths further.

“Road traffic crashes are frequently predictable and preventable. Many countries have already made significant progress in reducing their number of crashes and casualties through education and the implementation of smarter, safer policies. More than two years into the Decade of Action for Road Safety, I remain committed to supporting sustainable road safety programs and partnerships to save lives and minimize crash-related injuries, and as we celebrate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, I encourage all Americans to be extra mindful when on the road.”

Congressman Alcee L.
