Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in celebration of United Nations Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in 1945: \u201cCelebrated on October 24th each year, United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations in 1945 with the ratification of its founding document, the UN Charter.\u00a0 Since its inception 69 years ago, the United Nations has worked tirelessly to implement international peacekeeping initiatives; provide conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance; promote democracy, human rights and gender equality on a global scale; and employ myriad other initiatives ranging from disaster relief to counter-terrorism.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cAs the Ranking Democratic Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission), I am acutely aware of the challenges that many countries face and of the urgent need for the international community to address issues of violence, sustainable development, and health while helping foster freedom and tolerance. The importance of the UN\u2019s work has never been more relevant as our world deals with multiple crises \u2013 from the ongoing ISIS threat to the spread of the Ebola virus.\u00a0 On this United Nations Day, I commend the UN for its continued commitment to maintaining international peace and promoting social progress, improved living standards, and human rights.\u201d  Congressman Alcee L.
