The fast was begun by Eliseo Medina, International Secretary-Treasurer of the Service Employees International Union, who fasted with advocates for 22 days as part of \u201cFast 4 Families: A Call for Immigration Reform and Citizenship.\u201d Beginning on December 3, 2013, Congressional lawmakers joined in the fast, taking turns fasting for 24 hours: one lawmaker fasts then passes the fast on to another lawmaker the following day.\nOn Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 11am EST, Congressman Tony Cardenas (CA-29) will pass his fast to Congressman Al Green. Congressman Al Green will then pass his fast to Congressman Emanuel Clever (MO-05) on Monday, December 9, 2013, at 11am EST.\n\u201cFasting for 24 hours is something I will gladly do if it raises awareness about the issue of comprehensive immigration reform,\u201d Congressman Al Green said. \u201cAllowing certain communities to continue to exist in this climate of consistent uncertainty about their status in our nation is unacceptable and unconscionable.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://algreen.house.gov/press-release/congressman-al-green-fasts-day-solidarity-comprehensive-immigration-reform"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 4.76016104221344, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
