Calvert Condemns Obamas Unconstitutional Power Grab", "2014-11-20", "2014", "2014-11", "Republican", "House", "CA", "Ken Calvert", "C000059", "calvert.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement in response to President Obama\u2019s executive action affecting illegal immigrants:\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cLike many Americans, I strongly oppose President Obama\u2019s decision to proceed with an unprecedented and unconstitutional executive action adjusting the status of millions of illegal immigrants.\u00a0 Our nation\u2019s founders carefully placed the power to create and modify laws with Congress and left the President with the power to execute them.\u00a0 \r\n\u00a0\r\nToday, President Obama is unquestionably setting a dangerous precedent by attempting to rewrite our immigrations laws without Congressional action.\u00a0 Regardless of your views on what reforms are necessary to our immigration laws, Americans should be extremely wary of granting any President the power to change laws affecting millions of people single-handedly.\u00a0 The next President will be able to undo President Obama\u2019s executive action with the stroke of a pen on their first day in office.\u00a0 \r\n\u00a0\r\nI completely agree with the comments made by George Washington University Law School Professor Jonathan Turley, who describes himself as a liberal, that \"what the President is suggesting is tearing at the very fabric of the Constitution.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\nMy constituents want to see increased border security and the mandatory use of E-Verify at the heart of any action to reform our immigration laws.\u00a0 It is very telling that the President is willing to reach beyond his Constitutional authority on nearly every issue but not act where there is bipartisan support \u2013 increasing border security and an expansion of E-Verify.\u00a0 Despite the President\u2019s actions, I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House to advance efforts that will strengthen our border security and make the use of E-Verify mandatory.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u00a0\r\nU.S. Constitution\r\n\u00a0\r\nARTICLE I, SECTION 8, CLAUSE 4\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cThe Congress shall have Power To...establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization....\u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\nARTICLE II, SECTION 3\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe President \u201cshall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://calvert.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=397399"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.152708824723959, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
