Cartwright Announces $198,330 Grant Awarded to Catholic Social Services to Curb Youth Homelessness", "2016-09-29", "2016", "2016-09", "Democrat", "House", "PA", "Matt Cartwright", "C001090", "cartwright.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Washington, DC \u2013 Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a Health Services grant in the amount of $198,330 to Catholic Social Services of Wilkes-Barre through the Administration for Children and Families\u2019 Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB).\n\u201cCatholic Social Services makes a big difference in the lives of young people throughout northeastern Pennsylvania,\u201d said Rep. Cartwright, member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. \u00a0\u201cThese funds will help them continue the important work they are doing on behalf of vulnerable, at-risk youth throughout our region.\u201d\nCatholic Social Services will use the funds to help administer the FYSB\u2019s Basic Center Program.\u00a0 The program works to strengthen community-based programs that meet the immediate needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families. \u00a0The programs provide youth up to age 18 with emergency shelter, food, clothing, counseling and referrals for health care.\nMost basic centers can provide 21 days of shelter for up to 20 youth.\u00a0 There are exceptions for jurisdictions that have different standards for licensing.\u00a0 Basic centers seek to reunite young people with their families, whenever possible, or to locate appropriate alternative placements.\u00a0 Basic Centers provided emergency shelter for more than 30,000 youth on the streets in FY 2014.\n\u00a0Rep.
