Cartwright Announces $ 420,226 in NASA Funds for Nurture Nature Center in Easton", "2016-09-30", "2016", "2016-09", "Democrat", "House", "PA", "Matt Cartwright", "C001090", "cartwright.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Easton, PA \u2013 Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that a grant in the amount of $420,226 has been awarded to the Nurture Nature Center in Easton through NASA\u2019s Competitive Program for Science Museums, Planetariums, and NASA Visitor Centers Plus Other Opportunities (CP4SMPVC+).\nThe goal of the CP4SMPVC+ Program is to get more kids interested in education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).\n\u201cThis grant will help the Center get more kids interested in STEM fields,\u201d said Rep. Cartwright.\u00a0 \u201cHopefully, some of those kids will grow up to pursue careers in these fields, which will provide our nation\u2019s businesses with the workforce it needs to compete in today\u2019s global economy.\u201d\nThe Center\u2019s project, called \u201c6 Degrees of Influence: Understanding the Interconnectedness of Earth Systems\u201d supports NASA\u2019s education mission to advance high quality STEM education through the development of programming for middle school students, teachers, and minority undergraduates.\nThe project focuses on earth science concepts and the theme of interconnectedness, relying on a \u20186 Degrees of Influence\u2019 (similar to the 6 degrees of separation) to capture interest.\u00a0 The project will include the development of a Science on a Sphere\u00ae program and associated arts-based communication workshop to help participants visualize and physically diagram their connections to global issues.\u00a0 Additionally, there will be an undergraduate internship program that engages historically underrepresented youth, as well as teacher education workshops.\u00a0 The two-year project will kick off in February 2017.\nNurture Nature Center is a dynamic center for community learning about local environmental risks.\nNASA\u2019s CP4SMPVC+ Program aims to encourage STEM education and careers by working collaboratively with other agencies to engage students, teachers, and faculty in NASA\u2019s missions and unique assets.\u00a0 Awards are announced every two years, pending availability of funds.\nRep.
