Chris Smith (NJ-04) and the New Jersey Adjutant General, Brigadier General Michael L. Cunniff, broke ground on six Superstorm Sandy-related projects at the National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt, Monmouth County. \r\nThe projects, totaling over $20 million, are replacing damaged facilities and utilities on the installation and were funded through the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental package Smith and the New Jersey Delegation successfully enacted in the aftermath of the storm: the Disaster Appropriations Act (now Public Law 113-2). \r\n\u201cThis groundbreaking is an important step in the ongoing recovery process our state faced in the wake of one of the most damaging storms in our, and the nation\u2019s, history,\u201d said Smith, who represents Sea Girt. \u201cMany members of the New Jersey Guard, like our first responders, were called to assist others in need\u2014and did so heroically and without hesitation\u2014while concurrently dealing with damage to their own homes.\u201d\r\nBrig. Gen. Cunniff thanked Smith for his strong support for the projects in the wake of Sandy.\r\n\u201cCongressman Smith represents Seagirt, and as always has been a staunch supporter of the Guard,\u201d Cunniff said. \u201cOn behalf of the 8,400 soldiers and airmen of the New Jersey National Guard, this is a pretty big deal.\u201d\r\nThe new facilities include:\\\r\n \r\n    \r\n    a $4.842 million medical clinic; \r\n    \r\n    \r\n    a $2.05 million data and communications duct bank; \r\n    \r\n    \r\n    two maintenance shops worth over $6.4 million;\r\n    \r\n    \r\n    a $1.984 million back-up power generation Station, and; \r\n    \r\n    \r\n    a $4.639 million general instruction building.\r\n    \u00a0\r\n    \u201cThese projects also highlight the continued military value of Sea Girt to our national defense and to National Guard readiness: roughly 5,000 soldiers from throughout the Northeast train at Sea Girt annually,\u201d Smith concluded. \r\n    \u00a0\r\n    ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://chrissmith.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=399906"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8326559327542782, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
