Cicilline today for his work to include after school initiatives in the Every Student Succeeds Act that passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week.\nThis is a big win for Rhode Island students, said Cumberland High School Principal and 2016 NASSP National Principal of the Year Alan Tenreiro. Expanding the range of student support services we need, including after school programs, will help more young people get the help they need outside the classroom. I thank Congressman Cicilline for getting this work done for our state.\nThe Every Student Succeeds Act, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act through Fiscal Year 2020, resulted from negotiations between House and Senate conferees. The bill passed the House by an overwhelming 359-64 vote on Wednesday.\nCicilline successfully lobbied the House and Senate conferees to include provisions he originally introduced earlier this year as part of the Community Partnerships in Education Act in order to strengthen after school efforts across the nation. The Every Student Succeeds Act is now expected to be considered by the U.S. Senate as early as next week.\nAs Providence residents already know, effective after school initiatives help young people succeed from the moment they wake up in the morning until they go to bed at night, said Providence After School Alliance Executive Director Hillary Salmons. PASA applauds Congressman Cicilline for his work to include new and effective after school initiatives in the education bill, which will benefit young people all across Rhode Island. \nAmong the provisions proposed by Cicilline are:\n Requirements for school districts to engage with community partners and intermediaries when applying for federal grants and implementing state and local education plans;\nNew federal grants for states and school districts to support drug and violence prevention, healthy lifestyles, and social development skills;\nReauthorization of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which provide a dedicated funding stream for after school programming, as well as critical services for low-income students to promote physical and social development, health and nutrition awareness, and academic achievement;\n Few tools are as effective at promoting development and keeping kids safe as quality after school initiatives, said Cicilline. The inclusion of these proposals in the Every Student Succeeds Act will provide greater opportunities for at-risk youth and keep them on a solid track to success. \nCicilline, who served as Mayor of Providence from 2003 to 2011, has long advocated for greater federal support of after school initiatives. He established the Providence After School Alliance to serve more than 1,000 middle school students with hands-on learning opportunities during his time as Mayor, and earlier this year led a letter to the House Appropriations Committee requesting $1.15 billion in funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://cicilline.house.gov/press-release/after-school-advocates-applaud-cicilline%E2%80%99s-work-include-new-strengthened-provisions"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.032849308103323, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
