These competitive grants were awarded to organizations that contribute to the cultural and economic development of the state through the arts. This is NEA\u2019s first round of FY2014 competitive grant awards.\n\u201cThis federal funding will help support local artists and bolster economic development and education through the arts,\u201d said U.S. Senator Jack Reed, the Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that oversees NEA\u2019s budget. \u201cBy combining federal grants with state and local funds and private donations, we are expanding opportunities for young people and supporting artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation in communities across the state.\u201d\n\u201cRhode Island\u2019s arts community plays an important role in the revitalization of our economy,\u201d said U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, an ex-officio member of the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the NEA. \u201cI\u2019m proud to announce these grants, which will help some of our most talented arts organizations continue to enrich our state\u2019s robust arts scene and provide important arts education programs for our youth.\u201d\n\u201cI am so proud of Rhode Island\u2019s vibrant arts community, and I know these grants will be put to good use,\u201d said Congressman Jim Langevin. \u201cNot only are the arts a major draw for tourism, and therefore a significant part of our economy, but they are also critical to education. The arts keep our students engaged and energized, and I am glad to see the list of recipients \u00a0include agencies that provide arts education opportunities.\u201d\n\"I am\u00a0delighted to join with the delegation to announce this competitive grant award to the organizations in Rhode Island that do so much to help our young people get involved in the arts and build upon the great programs that are already at work,\" said Congressman Cicilline. \"The Alliance of Artists Communities in Providence, RI,\u00a0Everett Dance Theatre in \u00a0Providence, RI, and RiverzEdge Arts Project Inc. in Woonsocket, RI are providing essential avenues to build a robust artistic community in Rhode Island and I am delighted to help them continue to do this important work.\"\nThis first round of NEA FY2014 competitive grants were \u00a0awarded to organizations across the country that support the creation and presentation of artistically excellent work, both new and established. Projects include commissions, residencies, rehearsals, workshops, performances, exhibitions, publications, festivals, training programs and literature fellowships.\u00a0 Over $23 million was awarded during the first round, which included over $1.6 million to arts education projects. Grants from the NEA generate, on average, $9 from non-federal sources for each $1 awarded.\nThe following Rhode Island organizations received NEA funding:\nAlliance of Artists Communities; Providence, RI \u2013 $40,000 to support the research and publication of \u201cArtist Residencies and Social Practice\nEverett Dance Theatre; Providence, RI \u2013 $15,000 to support \u201cThe Freedom Project,\u201d a new multidisciplinary performance about the American prison system\nRiverzEdge Arts Project Inc.; Woonsocket, RI \u2013 $23,000 to support the Studio Arts &amp; Enterprise Projects\nFirstWorks; Providence, RI - $20,000 to support the multidisciplinary Cross-Wired series\nNew Urban Arts; Providence, RI - $15,000 to support the Youth Mentorship in the Arts program and the Summer Art Inquiry program for \u00a0teens\nTrinity Repertory Company; Providence, RI - $10,000 to \u00a0support a new production of \u201cOliver!,\u201d Lionel Bart\u2019s classical musical inspired by Charles Dickens\u2019\u00a0Oliver Twist\u00a0with direction by Sharon and Richard Jenkins.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://cicilline.house.gov/press-release/ri-congressional-delegation-announces-123000-federal-funding-rhode-island-art"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.7482656985521317, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
