{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://cohen.house.gov/press-release/cohen-statement-court-order-against-mo%E2%80%99-money", "Cohen Statement on Court Order Against Mo\u2019 Money", "2013-09-18", "2013", "2013-09", "Democrat", "House", "TN", "Steve Cohen", "C001068", "cohen.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "[MEMPHIS, TN] \u2013 After a federal court permanently barred the owners and a former manager of Mo\u2019 Money Taxes from preparing tax returns for others and owning or operating a tax return preparation business, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement:\n\u201cThis court order against Mo\u2019 Money sends a striking message that businesses cannot take advantage of Memphians or victimize America through tax fraud,\u201d said Congressman Cohen. \u201cThose perpetrating tax preparation scams that prey on the poor and the middle class should be punished as severely as possible under the law, and I\u2019m glad the Department of Justice responded to the concerns of my constituents and took action against these individuals. This is good news for consumers and taxpayers in Memphis.\u201d\nMo\u2019 Money had been the subject of a U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division lawsuit seeking to shut the business down. The suit also accused its owners of creating and maintaining a business environment that encourages the preparation of fraudulent federal income tax returns. The civil injunction order announced today against Mo\u2019 Money owners Markey Granberry and Derrick Robinson, as well as former manager Eumora Reese, was signed by Judge S. Thomas Anderson of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.\nIn March 2012, Congressman Cohen met with Congressman Robert \u201cBobby\u201d Scott (VA-03) and a senior Justice Department official to follow up on their February 7, 2012 letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., requesting his office\u2019s assistance in addressing the problems their constituents were having with the Mo\u2019 Money tax preparation firm. They also called on the House Judiciary Committee to hold a hearing on Mo\u2019 Money, which shed light on the company\u2019s business practices when the Committee met on June 28, 2012.\nIn January 2012, both members\u2019 Congressional offices began receiving complaints from constituents regarding Mo\u2019 Money.\u00a0 In addition to other problems, the complaints alleged:\n bounced checks issued by Mo\u2019 Money for tax refunds;\n\tfailure by Mo\u2019 Money to provide refunds the IRS had sent it for constituents who had filed their taxes through the company; and\n\texcessive fees deducted by the company from refunds.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://cohen.house.gov/press-release/cohen-statement-court-order-against-mo%E2%80%99-money"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.8770978786051273, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
