Jim Cooper (TN-5) today applauded the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for awarding more than $10 million in grants to fight gender bias in medicine. Vanderbilt University will be one of the research centers chosen to study gender differences.\nAccording to The New York Times, approximately 80 scientists will receive funding to include more women in clinical trials and \u201cto ensure that \u2026 laboratory animals, even cell lines, are representative of both genders.\u201d Scientists also will use the money to investigate gender discrepancies in their data, the newspaper said.\n\u201cThis is a great first step to ensuring equality in medical research,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cBetter science leads to better outcomes.\u201d\nCurrent law does not require researchers to study female animals when conducting basic medical research.
