{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://cramer.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/cramer-leads-letter-to-canadian-government-on-super-bowl-ads-infringing", "Cramer Leads Letter to Canadian Government on Super Bowl Ads Infringing on U.S. Trade Rights", "2016-12-08", "2016", "2016-12", "Republican", "House", "ND", "Kevin Cramer", "C001096", "cramer.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Listen to Audio Here\nWASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Congressmen Kevin Cramer\u00a0(R-N.D.)\u00a0and\u00a0Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.),\u00a0co-chairmen of the House Northern Border Caucus, along with Caucus members Congressman Chris Collins (R-N.Y.)\u00a0and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.),\u00a0are urging Canadian officials to\u00a0prevent\u00a0the implementation of an arbitrary regulation targeting the annual broadcast of the Super Bowl.\u00a0\u00a0In a letter sent to the Canadian government today, they wrote the inability to show Canadian ads during the Super Bowl would harm the ability of the National Football League (NFL) to protect the value of its programming in Canada.\u00a0This violates, they wrote, Canada\u2019s trade obligations under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to provide key intellectual property protections to U.S. copyright owners.\n\u201cThe United States maintains a close relationship with our northern neighbor, one that is built on a mutual respect for our trade laws,\u201d said Cramer.\u00a0 \u201cUnfortunately, in this instance, Canadian regulators are interfering with U.S. copyright protections given to all American businesses.\u00a0 This rule established by the Canadian government discriminates against an American company and sets a dangerous precedent.\u00a0 The Super Bowl is one of the world\u2019s most televised international broadcasts, and each country must respect America\u2019s intellectual property rights laws in order to watch it.\u201d\u00a0\nThe order issued by Canada\u2019s broadcast regulator singles out the Super Bowl for disparate treatment while all other similarly situated content continues to enjoy the benefit of a Canadian regulatory policy in place for more than 40 years.\u00a0The letter said this order undermines the contractual rights between a U.S. company, the NFL, \u00a0and its Canadian licensee, Bell Media, and creates serious \u2013 and unexpected \u2013 uncertainty in the marketplace for both.\u00a0\u2018\nThe Super Bowl is the most watched television program in Canada, capturing an estimated 9 million average viewers annually.\nCramer is\u00a0North Dakota\u2019s at-large Congressman, and is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. \u00a0The House Northern Border Caucus consists of members who represent districts along the Canadian border.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://cramer.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/cramer-leads-letter-to-canadian-government-on-super-bowl-ads-infringing"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.5627939719706774, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
