Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, joined Make the Road New York, the largest participatory immigrant-led organization in the city, at their Jackson Heights center for a discussion on the path forward on immigration under the incoming Trump administration. Amid growing uncertainty for millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and the thousands of DREAMers who enrolled in President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative, Crowley addressed topics of concern while stressing the importance of knowing their rights.
“Our country has a long and proud immigrant tradition that did not end on Election Day,” said Rep. Crowley. “As the son and grandson of immigrants, I’ve never been prouder to represent one of the most diverse districts in the nation. But fixing our broken immigration system continues to be one of the great moral obligations of our time. We will not sit idly by as the incoming Trump administration attempts to enact policies that threaten to tear families apart. We cannot lose sight of the fact that we still have our rights and we still have our voices - which we will raise louder than ever in the face of divisive, bigoted views that simply do not represent the majority of Americans.”
“Immigrant families like mine are here to stay,” said Leonor, a member of Make the Road New York and Queens resident. “We demand that our President-elect and Congress understand the sacrifices and contributions that we have made, and stop with the attacks on our families. And we are committed to fighting for our rights for the next four years, and beyond.”
“Committed fighters like Leonor and organizations like Make the Road New York are now more important than ever,” continued Crowley. “From the start, their advocacy has been crucial in the fight for the dignity of our immigrant communities and they will continue to be pillars for those of us who are committed to protecting our American values. And while so many continue to feel anxiety over how immigration laws will affect them in the short term, advocacy organizations like Make the Road New York are critical partners to provide both the information people need to know and ideas on how we can best organize to make our voices heard in the fight that lies ahead.”
Crowley, who has been an outspoken advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, recently joined more than 100 Members of Congress in a letter urging President Obama to take action to protect the misuse of the names and private information of those who enrolled in the DACA program.
Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx.
