Cummings (MD-07) was joined by Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) in a call for support of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at a press conference at the Maryland Food Bank.\u00a0 The approach of the holiday season highlights the importance of the program, which could face cuts up to $40 billion if the House and Senate Farm Bill Conference Committee adopts Republican authored changes to SNAP.\n\u201cToday, we heard firsthand accounts of hunger in our community \u2013 families who have found themselves in circumstances outside of their control, struggling to ensure they can put meals on the table,\u201d Congressman Cummings said.\u00a0 \u201cAs the richest nation in the world, there is no reason we can\u2019t feed every child \u2013 and SNAP is one way we can do that.\u00a0 The immense cuts proposed to programs like this take food out of the mouths of those in need.\u00a0 As a country, we can do better.\u201d\n\u201cAs Maryland families prepare their tables to celebrate Thanksgiving, our most vulnerable need a government on their side so they won\u2019t have to go to bed hungry. I want families to know I\u2019m on their side,\u201d Senator Mikulski said. \u201cAs a former social worker, I know the importance of nutrition assistance to those who need it most. I\u2019m a fighter and a reformer. I\u2019m fighting for smart federal investments that reflect our American values of protecting our country and neighbor helping neighbor. The Maryland Food Bank plays a critical role in delivering food to families who need it most.
