{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://delaney.house.gov//news/in-the-news/federal-grant-to-help-veterans-find-homes", "Federal grant to help veterans find homes", "2014-12-15", "2014", "2014-12", "Democrat", "House", "MD", "John Delaney", "D000620", "delaney.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Hagerstown Herald-Mail coverage of a December 2014 grant to help homeless veterans in Western Maryland:\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thirty veterans living in halfway houses at undisclosed locations in Hagerstown will be able to find more stable homes thanks to a $219,521 federal grant.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ted Shankle, executive director of the Hagerstown Housing Authority, said the grant was awarded earlier this week by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development \u2014 Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"They'll be able to move out of halfway houses into permanent housing,\" he said.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The local money was part of a $491,367 grant that was issued statewide, according to the offices of Rep. John Delaney, and U.S. Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, all Maryland Democrats.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Calvert County Housing Authority received $198,901 of the grant, while the Baltimore County Housing Authority got $72,945.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe have a sacred obligation to support our nation\u2019s veterans, and there\u2019s little more fundamental to a person\u2019s well-being and dignity than having a place to live\u201d Delaney said in a news release.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m hopeful that federal grants to the Hagerstown Housing Authority will help Western Maryland veterans secure the permanent housing they deserve,\u201d he said.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"Veterans Affairs will screen those vets to make sure they'll be good tenants,\" Shankle said.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He said veterans who participate in the program will move into privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income to pay rent.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In cases where the veteran is unemployed, the vouchers would subsidize other types of income, such as disability and Social Security, according to Shankle.\n\t\u00a0\n\t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He said the housing authority will provide rental assistance to the veterans, while the VA in Martinsburg will offer supportive services and case management.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://delaney.house.gov//news/in-the-news/federal-grant-to-help-veterans-find-homes"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7520108483731747, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
