Res. 59, The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, legislation that would establish a two-year budget for the federal government and set forth appropriate budget levels for the remainder of Fiscal Years 2014 and 2015. The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 332-94.\r\n\u00a0\u201cThe budget deal I supported today in the House of Representatives is far from perfect, but it\u2019s a small step towards reducing our deficit and reigning in outrageous spending in Washington, D.C., said Congressman Don Young. \u201cThis budget compromise, championed by Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI), helps the American people and job-creating businesses steer clear of Washington-created uncertainty by avoiding the jump from one crisis to the next.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\u201cThis compromise begins to address our budgetary woes through spending reforms rather than on the backs of taxpayers. It also helps soften the blow of Sequestration that greatly impacted training, readiness, and the morale across all branches of our nation\u2019s military.\u201d\r\n\u201cI\u2019ve been very clear that Congress must return to a regular budgeting process, because this is where the power of the purse should exist. As a nation we cannot cut or spend our way to prosperity nor can we tax our way to a budget surpluses. This is why I have supported several budget plans that eliminate wasteful spending, reform entitlements, reduce our budget deficit, and cut the size of government, all without raising taxes. This was the best plan we were going to get from Senate Democrats at this time and as I\u2019ve said before, if you try to swallow the entire apple at once, you\u2019ll choke. You have to take it one bite at a time.\u201d\r\nWhile Congressman has expressed general concerns with a number of provisions within the bill, including the increase to Aviation Security Fees, he is happy that the bill accomplished the following:\r\n \r\n    Lowers Senate Spending Levels:\u00a0 Sets overall discretionary spending for the current fiscal year at $1.012 trillion \u2014 lower than the Senate budget level of $1.058 trillion.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Replaces Arbitrary and Indiscriminate Sequestration:\u00a0 Provides $63 billion in sequester relief over two years, split evenly between defense and non-defense programs; offset in other places of the budget. Increases military mission readiness in Alaska, across the country, and abroad through restored sequester funding.\r\n \r\n \r\n     Reduces the Deficit by over $20 Billion:\u00a0 Reduces the deficit by between $20 and $23 billion through dozens of specific deficit-reduction provisions, with mandatory savings and non-tax revenue totaling approximately $85 billion.\u00a0\r\n \r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://donyoung.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=364366"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.2865089811384678, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
