Grijalva congratulated several Southern Arizona recipients of recent grants and federal awards that will improve the lives of local constituents and highlighted upcoming grant application deadlines. Details are below.\r\n\r\n\tAwarded Grants and Contracts\r\n\r\n\tDate: Sept. 30\r\n\r\n\tRecipient: Tucson-based West Point Contractors, Inc.\r\n\r\n\tGranting Organization: Army Corps of Engineers\r\n\r\n\tAmount: $3.99 million\r\n\r\n\tPurpose: To construct a bridge over the Nogales Wash in the Chula Vista neighborhood north of Nogales, Ariz. Construction is scheduled to begin in October and finish in June of 2014.\r\n\r\n\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n\tDate: Sept. 30\r\n\r\n\tRecipient: University of Arizona\r\n\r\n\tGranting Organization: Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Community Services\r\n\r\n\tAmount: $585,504\r\n\r\n\tPurpose: The grant comes through the Assets for Independence program to help low-income students afford a medical education. You can learn more from HHS at http://1.usa.gov/18mb0LR.\r\n\r\n\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n\tDate: Sept. 30\r\n\r\n\tRecipient: Nogales Community Development Corporation\r\n\r\n\tGranting Organization: HHS Office of Community Services\r\n\r\n\tAmount: $800,000\r\n\r\n\tPurpose: The Community Economic Development program is a federal grant effort funding Community Development Corporations that address the economic needs of low-income individuals and families through sustainable business development and employment opportunities. You can learn more at http://1.usa.gov/14Z3PZN.\r\n\r\n\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n\tDate: Sept. 30\r\n\r\n\tRecipient: Tohono O\u2019odham Community Action (two grants)\r\n\r\n\tGranting Organization: HHS Office of Community Services\r\n\r\n\tAmounts: $300,000 (local food grant), $159,650 (native nutrition program grant)\r\n\r\n\tPurpose: The recipient got two recent HHS grants. The local food grant of $300,000 will help fund the group\u2019s project to create a locally-based alternative to the current Tohono O\u2019odham school lunch provider. The grant will help establish a local school lunch provider business with local employees based on local traditional foods. The effort will include a cultural education component stressing the history of traditional foods and Tohono O\u2019odham heritage and community. A separate but related grant for a native nutrition program will help the Tohono O\u2019odham continue training young farmers, provide a commercial kitchen with a storage area for farmers to store food, market local produce, and provide venues for farmers markets and other food-related spaces.\r\n\r\n\tFor more information: Nina Sajovec Altshul at (520) 561-7001 or nina@tocaonline.org.\r\n\r\n\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n\tDate: Sept. 25\r\n\r\n\tRecipient: Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation\r\n\r\n\tGranting Organization: HHS Center for Substance Abuse Prevention\r\n\r\n\tAmounts: $116,000\r\n\r\n\tPurpose: The grant will fund a program to use new media strategies to reduce HIV/AIDS rates among Latino and minority LGBTQ youth.\r\n\r\n\tFor more information: Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation at (520) 628-7223.\r\n\r\n\t\u00a0\r\n\r\n\tUpcoming Grant Deadlines\r\n\r\n\tSeveral grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities are accepting applications until early December.\r\n\r\n\tSustaining Cultural Heritage Collections(Deadline: December 3) \u2013 grants awarded to cultural institutions to aid them in the preservation and maintenance of their collections. Institutions that most commonly apply for this grant are libraries, museums and archives. This grant is given with the intention to help these institutions become more self-sufficient and strike a balance between their long-term costs of maintaining their collections and their overall efficiency. This grant is awarded to teams of two or more scholars doing either full-time or part-time activities for a period of 1-3 years. The results of this research must then be presented to a scholarly and public audience at the end of that period. This grant is awarded to teams of at least one editor or translator and one other staff member doing either full-time or part-time activities for a period of 1-3 years. Projects funded by these grants usually include literary, philosophical or historical materials, however other types of work have been granted funding.
