Grijalva Praises DOI Funds for Native American Education", "2014-10-23", "2014", "2014-10", "Democrat", "House", "AZ", "Ra\u00fal Grijalva", "G000551", "grijalva.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "TUCSON, AZ \u2013 Congressman Ra\u00fal Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Interior announced $1.2 million in Sovereignty in Indian Education (SIE) enhancement funds will be awarded to six federally recognized tribes to promote tribal control and operation of Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)-funded schools on their reservations. Three of the six recipients \u2013 Gila River Indian Community, Tohono O\u2019Odham Nation and Navajo Nation \u2013 are located in Arizona.\r\n\r\n\t\u201cNative American tribes know best when it comes to promoting and preserving the values, traditions and languages that are unique to their heritage,\u201d said Rep. Grijalva. \u201cThe funds announced today will increase tribal control over curriculum taught to Native American children, ensuring their distinct cultures and tribal identities are passed down to the next generation.\u201d\r\n\r\n\tOriginally recommended in June, 2014 by the American Indian Education Stud Group convened by Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, the funds are intended to empower native populations in preserving tribal identities.\r\n\r\n\t\u201cI commend the Department of Interior and their Bureau of Indian Education for following through on the recommendations of the American Indian Education Study Group,\u201d Grijalva continued. \u201cThe $200,000 given to each recipient to create tribally managed school systems will do more than educate young Native Americans \u2013 it will ensure the proud history and norms of their ancestors remain intact for future generations.\r\n\r\n\tFunds announced today will be provided to the following six tribes:\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gila River Indian Community, Sacaton, Arizona\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Fort Yates, North Dakota\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, Belcourt, North Dakota\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tohono O\u2019Odham Nation, Sells, Arizona\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Navajo Nation, Window Rock, Arizona\r\n\r\n\t\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oglala Sioux Tribe, Pine Ridge, South Dakota", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://grijalva.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=13&itemid=1792"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9074839763343334, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
