D.C. \u2013 Today, Representatives Darrell Issa (CA-49), Jim Sensenbrenner (WI-5), Trent Franks (AZ-08), Blake Farenthold (TX-27), Trey Gowdy (SC-04), Raul Labrador (ID-01) and Ted Poe (TX-02) sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. urging an investigation of the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, for lying to Congress while testifying before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in March of 2013.\u00a0\n\n\u201cDirector Clapper\u2019s willful lie under oath fuels the unhealthy cynicism and distrust that citizens feel toward their government and undermines Congress\u2019s ability to perform its Constitutional function,\u201d the Members write in their letter to Holder. \u201cThere are differences of opinion about the propriety of the NSA\u2019s data collection programs.\u00a0 There can be no disagreement, however, on the basic premise that congressional witnesses must answer truthfully.\u201d\n\u201cCongressional oversight depends on truthful testimony\u2014witnesses cannot be allowed to lie to Congress.\u00a0 Accordingly, we request you investigate Director of National Intelligence James Clapper\u2019s \u2018erroneous\u2019 statements to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence earlier this year.\u201d\nAt a March 12, 2013 Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing, Director Clapper was asked if, \u201cthe NSA collected any type of data at all on millions of hundreds of millions of Americans\u201d to which he responded with, \u201cNo, Sir.\u201d\u00a0 Four months later, in June 2013, after the Snowden leaks publicly exposed Clapper\u2019s testimony as false, Clapper finally retracted his remarks and wrote, \u201cMy response was clearly erroneous, for which I apologize.\u201d\nTo read the text of the letter, please click here.\n\u00a0\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://issa.house.gov/press-releases/2013/12/house-judiciary-committee-members-call-for-doj-investigation-of-national-intelligence-director-clapper-for-lying-to-congress/"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8818800561130047, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
