The Congressman has joined House colleagues in: - Highlighting how the President has failed to establish a policy toward ISIS or Syria. His failure is revealed by the statement just hours before the Paris massacre the ISIS had been contained. - Pointing out that the FBI Director and Homeland Security Secretary have identified significant difficulties with vetting Syrian refugees given the information currently available. - Urging the State Department to immediately halt the admission of refugees from Syria and Iraq into America. - Cosponsoring legislation designed to halt funding to refugee resettlement programs and place Congress in the driver's seat of approving new refugee admissions to the United States.\r\nInformation on H.R. 4038, the American SAFE Act of 2015 (information courtesy of the Judiciary Committee)\r\n- The bill prevents admission to the United States of any proposed Syrian or Iraqi refugee, or any proposed refugee present in Iraq or Syria at any time on or after March 1st, 2011, until the nations top security officialsthe Secretary of Homeland Security, the Director of the FBI, and the Director of National Intelligence unanimously certify that the individual does not represent a security threat.\r\n- It goes further and makes sure the FBI has a direct role in validating that the background checks are thorough enough to keep dangerous individuals out of the country.\r\n- Under this legislation, no Syrian or Iraqi refugee can enter the United States until the American peoples representatives in Congress receive these certifications\r\n- It also creates an additional layer of protection by requiring the DHS Inspector General to independently assess the refugee approvalsmaking sure that high-risk individuals do not slip through the cracks. -Requires the administration, when considering the admission of refugees from Iraq and Syria, to prioritize the resettlement of oppressed religious minorities.\r\n- Ultimately, this legislation would put in place the most robust national-security vetting process in history for any refugee population, and it gives the American people the assurances needed that we will do everything possible to prevent terrorists from reaching our shores.\r\n\"The dangers presented by ISIS and the inadequate strategy and leadership coming from President Obama demand that the people's Representatives in Congress step forward with plans and policies to protect this nation, and that is exactly what we're doing. The President was deluded when he said that ISIS was 'contained', mere hours before they struck in Paris. His failures of leadership created the problems confronting us today.\"- Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://lamborn.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=1408"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7219668477773666, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
