The Prevent Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection. Its Leader in Cancer Prevention award recognizes contributions to cancer prevention and early detection through legislation, advocacy or education.\nCancer was the great public health challenge of the 20th century and countless people work every day toward a 21st century that is cancer free. The doctors, medical professionals, scientists and researchers, advocates and survivors and their loved ones are the heroes of cancer care. I am proud to be their voice in Washington and together we will continue these efforts until we find a cure, said Lance, who lost his mother 50 years ago to cancer. \nCarolyn Aldig, President and Founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, praised Lance. Under Congressman Lances leadership, we have been able to create real change so fewer families face the challenges of cancer diagnoses or the devastation of losing loved ones to these diseases. The Congressional Leaders in Cancer Prevention have introduced and supported critical cancer prevention legislation, served as messengers to their communities and been strong champions of cancer research, funding, education and outreach.\nThe Prevent Cancer Foundations goal is to reduce mortality from all preventable cancers by encouraging healthy behaviors, making health education and prevention and early-detection services more accessible to all communities and advocating for prevention based research. The Foundation cited several Lance achievements for the award:\n Passage of the 21st Century Cures Act  legislation that creates a National Institute of Health Innovation Fund, opens the innovation pipeline enabling biomedical innovation to come to the market faster and streamlines the regulatory process.\n\tPassage of the FDA Safety Over Sequestration Act  legislation which exempts Food and Drug Administration user fees from sequestration and puts those resources back for the approval of drugs and medical devices.\n\tPassage of the Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act  legislation that requires the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to develop a long-term strategic plan for developing better treatments and potential cures for the deadliest of cancers, such as pancreatic and lung cancers.\n\tPassage of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act  legislation that directs millions of dollars to support research into childhood cancer and other pediatric diseases and disorders.\n\tAuthoring the bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Education Act  a bill that will require that patients be informed of the availability and coverage of breast reconstruction and prostheses.\n\tAuthoring the bipartisan MODDERN Cures Act  a bill that will update the drug evaluation process to encourage the discovery and development of new treatments for rare diseases and cancers.\n\tAuthoring the bipartisan Cancer Drug Coverage Parity Act  a bill that ensures cancer patients affordable access to life-saving drug treatment.\n\tAuthoring the bipartisan Lymphedema Treatment Act  a bill that will improve coverage for the treatment of lymphedema from any cause by allowing for coverage of compression supplies.\n\tFounding the Congressional Life Science Caucus  a caucus for lawmakers to advocate for issues important to the life science community.\n\tFounding the Congressional Deadliest Cancers Caucus  a caucus will raise awareness about the deadliest forms of cancers and advocate for research and other measures to increase survival.\n\tLeading a bipartisan letter urging the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to protect access to life-saving colorectal cancer screenings. \n\tLeading a bipartisan effort to renew aid to 9/11 first responders and survivors  reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act will provide medical treatment and compensation to first responders, rescue workers and survivors who have been sickened or injured at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://lance.house.gov/newsroom/press-releases/lance-recognized-for-cancer-work"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.2428547963500023, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
