This two-year budget deal suspends the federal debt limit until March 2017 and breaks the 2011 budget caps for defense and non-defense programs:\n\"Rather than taking meaningful steps to address the growing debt, the budget deal removes spendingcaps put in place as part of the 2011 Budget Control Act (BCA)resulting in $80 billion in new spending over the next two years. I believe the spending caps set forth by the BCA and implemented through sequestration are the first real cuts in spending that the federal government has seen in decades and should remain intact.\n\"Additionally in past years Congress has required a serious commitment to reducing our Nations crippling deficit to accompany any vote tosignificantly raise the borrowing limit. The budget agreement brokered between President Obama and congressional leaders falls well short ofthat fiscally responsible requirement. Absent significant entitlement spending reforms and meaningful spending reductions, I could not support the final budget agreement.\"\nBackground: H.R. 1314, the Bipartisan Budget Act, suspends the federal debt limit through 2017, allowing for the accumulation of approximately $1.5 trillion in new federal debt and increases discretionary spending by $80 billion over two years.
