Currently, at least 80 committees and subcommittees claim some jurisdiction over cybersecurity, and Langevin called for a Select Committee that could cut across jurisdictional lines to \u201cinvestigate pressing cybersecurity matters, starting with Russian interference with the election.\u201d\n\u201cSpeaker Ryan said himself that \u2018any foreign intervention in our election is entirely unacceptable.\u2019 We must now back up those words with action, and I believe a Select Committee on Cybersecurity is the best way to streamline oversight and ensure a thorough, fair investigation into this disturbing attack on our democracy,\u201d said Langevin, a senior member of the House Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees, and a veteran of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.\nThe Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a joint statement in October indicating Russian interference with the 2016 election. Additional intelligence since then has provided mounting evidence of Russian involvement, including reports of the direct involvement of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Langevin noted that this incident is indicative of the breadth of challenges we face in cyberspace, and suggested that a select committee could also provide recommendations on removing barriers to effective oversight of cybersecurity issues going forward.\n\u201cI have been studying cybersecurity for nearly a decade, and while the awareness of this issue as a critical national and economic security challenge continues to grow, our nation remains grossly unprepared for the cyber threats of today and the new attack vectors of tomorrow,\u201d Langevin continued. \u201cI hope that this incident can be a call to action for my colleagues in Congress, so that we can sufficiently address this attack in the short-term, and also fortify our cyber defenses in the long-term.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://langevin.house.gov/press-release/langevin-calls-speaker-ryan-create-select-committee-cybersecurity"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7466278038918972, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
