{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://noem.house.gov/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=14A0336A-6FDE-48DC-B52F-775C3FDCB9D4", "Noem, Schakowsky Lead House in Passing the Women, Peace and Security Act", "2016-11-15", "2016", "2016-11", "Republican", "House", "SD", "Kristi Noem", "N000184", "noem.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "U.S. Representatives Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today led the House in passing H.R.5332, the Women, Peace, and Security Act.\u00a0 This bipartisan legislation would require the U.S. to develop a comprehensive strategy to increase and strengthen women\u2019s participation in peace negotiations and conflict prevention globally as well as ensure accountability to Congress.\r\n\u201cWe live in an extremely volatile and dangerous world where peace negotiations are ongoing in multiple regions,\u201d said Noem.\u00a0 \u201cWomen have proven to be influential forces in producing lasting peace within a community, yet are often underrepresented when it comes to conflict prevention and resolution.\u00a0 With this legislation in place, we can be assured that women will have a meaningful seat at the table.\u00a0 I\u2019m hopeful these reforms, as well as the long-term thinking and accountability this legislation requires, will help produce more sustainable outcomes during future conflict resolution and peace negotiation processes.\u201d\r\n\u201cWhen women are involved\u00a0in the peace process,\u00a0negotiations are more likely to end in a lasting agreement. That's the simple and powerful idea behind this legislation,\u201d said Schakowsky. \u201cAcross time and around the world, women have been uniquely and disproportionately affected by armed conflict. This legislation will ensure that women now have a meaningful role in peace building, conflict resolution, and conflict prevention.\u00a0The United States plays a crucial role in\u00a0promoting peace\u00a0all over the world.\u00a0By\u00a0making\u00a0women\u2019s participation in\u00a0the peace process\u00a0a national priority,\u00a0we\u00a0will\u00a0improve national and global security.\"\r\nResearch shows that peace agreements are 35 percent more likely to last at least 15 years when women are involved.\u00a0 The Women, Peace and Security Act would \u2013 for the first time \u2013 establish women\u2019s participation as a permanent element of U.S. foreign policy under Congressional oversight.\r\nReps. Noem and Schakowsky introduced H.R.5332 in May 2016 alongside cosponsors House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), and House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY).\u00a0 Sens.
