Jim Oberstar, who died in May, have made their way through Congress. The bill passed the U.S. House and one is being introduced in the U.S. Senate.\n\u201cBorn in Chisholm, Jim never forgot his roots,\u201d U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said. \u201cHe took the fighting spirit of the people of Northern Minnesota to Washington, and he used it to support critical transportation projects in our state. It\u2019s only fitting that one of our state\u2019s highways bear Jim\u2019s name as a lasting marker of his legacy of service, and today\u2019s action moves us one step closer to making that happen.\u201d\n\u201cWhen Jim Oberstar passed away, he left a remarkable legacy\u2014in Minnesota and all around the country,\u201d Sen. Al Franken said. \u201cBy the time Jim\u2014a consummate public servant\u2014rose to the Chairmanship of the House Transportation Committee, he knew more about transportation than anyone in this country. It's fitting that these sections of highway ultimately be renamed in his honor.\u201d\n\u201cThrough recessions, budget deficits, gas shortages and challenges of every kind, Jim Oberstar never wavered in his support for the interstate highway system because he understood how vital it is to our ability to create good jobs and literally drive our economy forward,\u201d Rep. Rick Nolan said.\nThe lawmakers have also introduced a bill to rename the Chisolm Post Office after the former Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
