Rick Nolan met with Iron Range leaders Monday in Chisholm for a candid discussion of challenges that will face the region during his next term.\nCurrent mayors or mayors-elect from Hibbing, Chisholm, Virginia, Buhl, Biwabik and Leonidas, as well as state representatives and county commissioners met for the lunch at Valentini\u2019s, which featured talk on mining, infrastructure and refocusing on the country\u2019s domestic issues.\n\n\tNolan thanked those in attendance for supporting him and offering ideas on what the region needs, and said having the backing of local authorities makes his job easier.\n\n\n\t\u201cLocal officials are the real unsung heroes in American government and politics,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re so close to their communities, they have serious responsibilities, and they don\u2019t get paid anything near the work and responsibilities they put in.\u201d\n\n\n\tThe thanks were sent right back at Nolan from most in attendance, with Hibbing Mayor Rick Cannata pointing to the Range Regional Airport expansion that Nolan helped secure funding for.\n\n\n\tCannata also said Nolan\u2019s insistence on requiring American-made steel in any Keystone XL pipeline was noted by labor groups. Nolan\u2019s provision didn\u2019t end up being included in legislation, which is still being discussed at the federal level.\n\n\n\t\u201cEven if it didn\u2019t have the provision with American-made steel, we want to thank you and we\u2019ll support you to the very end,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\tNolan said he\u2019d continue to work on the provision along with other measures, despite finding himself in the minority party in the house once again \u2014 the U.S. Senate will also be Republican controlled.\n\n\n\t\u201cA lot of people just assume well I\u2019m in the minority so it won\u2019t make any difference, but no, there are good men and women on the other side of the aisle and if you tell them you\u2019ve got something reasonable and you want to get it done, they\u2019ll frequently give you the chance,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\tFrom the east range, those in attendance mentioned Nolan\u2019s work on the Highway 53 project that was recently announced in Virginia, as well as the PolyMet project still in the review process.\n\n\n\tBoth projects fall under the categories of transportation and mining, which Nolan said will be among the most pressing priorities during his next term.\n\n\n\tThroughout the discussion Nolan said his office is open to any suggestions from the lawmakers, as their support and know-how of the region is invaluable.
