According to U.S. Census numbers, the District is home to more than 55,000 small businesses, with nearly 1-in-3 Black-owned and another 1-in-3 women-owned. Small Business Saturday, now in its fourth year, has become an annual tradition for American\u2019s to shop at smaller brick-and-mortar business in their community.\n\u201cThe District\u2019s small businesses, tens of thousands strong, are a testament to the strong entrepreneurial will of our residents,\u201d Norton said.\u00a0 \u201cThese are our neighbors and our friends.\u00a0 We need to patronize and boost them, particularly at this festive tie of year, when they make a disproportionate share of their revenue.\u201d\nLast month, Norton received the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Lifetime Legacy Award, a rare honor for a progressive Democrat, for her economic development bills and contributions to the progress and advancement of the District.\u00a0 The largest of Norton\u2019s economic development projects is the construction of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) headquarters at St. Elizabeths, located in the neighborhood of the boutique.\u00a0 Norton said that she expects to see many more small businesses along Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Good Hope Road, as the DHS complex Center Building is expected to bring the DHS secretary, top officials and another 700 DHS employees to the area.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://norton.house.gov//media-center/press-releases/norton-and-sba-administrator-recognize-small-business-saturday-by"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7975790649652481, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
