{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://pallone.house.gov/press-release/pallone-calls-universities-protect-students%E2%80%99-health-banning-use-university-debit-cards", "Pallone Calls on Universities to Protect Students Health By Banning Use of University Debit Cards to Pay for Indoor Tanning", "2014-12-18", "2014", "2014-12", "Democrat", "House", "NJ", "Frank Pallone", "P000034", "pallone.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) joined several of his colleagues in calling on Rutgers University and 17 other universities to protect the health of their students by ending practices that allow them to use university debit cards to pay for indoor tanning. \u00a0In light of Congressman Pallone\u2019s letter, Rutgers University intends to end the practice of allowing their students\u2019 debit cards to pay for indoor tanning by January 1, 2015, and he hopes other universities follow suit.\n\u201cIt is widely reported that indoor tanning increases the chances of developing melanoma and other adverse health conditions,\u201d said Pallone. \u201cAs such, Rutgers University and other schools around the country should take the necessary steps to end the practice of allowing their students to use university debit cards to pay for indoor tanning.\u00a0 Our universities should be promoting student health, not incentivizing their students to engage in activities that put their health at risk.\u201d\nA recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 18 universities allow their students to use student debit cards to pay for indoor tanning services.\u00a0 The Journal concluded that given the classification of indoor tanning beds as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, universities are in essence endorsing and even encouraging indoor tanning.\nFull text of the letter to Rutgers University is available here.\nThe list of 18 universities to which a letter was sent is available here.\n\u00a0\n-###-", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://pallone.house.gov/press-release/pallone-calls-universities-protect-students%E2%80%99-health-banning-use-university-debit-cards"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.705765025690198, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
