Payne, Jr. submitted the following statement into the U.S. House of Representatives official record, honoring the life of Rutgers University Professor Clement Price, whose funeral is being held today in Newark, New Jersey:\n\u201cI rise today to honor Rutgers University Professor Clement Price, who passed away earlier this month.\n\u201cDr. Price was born in Washington, DC, but adopted Newark as his beloved home. He became one of Newark\u2019s most ardent supporters and an esteemed author, historian, and humanitarian.\u00a0\n\u201cHe moved to Newark shortly after the 1967 riots, and earned his Ph.D. from Rutgers University, later becoming a professor there.\u00a0\n\u201cDr. Price was a very thoughtful man, and he was always supportive of me, often providing guidance. \u00a0\n\u201cI will forever be grateful for his help and dedication to our shared beloved city.\u00a0 Newark is without a doubt a better place to live because of Dr. Clement Price.\n\u201cThe last time I saw Dr. Price was just days before his passing. He was being honored by the Newark YMCA.\n\u201cHe had told me before that when he was a youngster, he was a server in the Members Dining Hall. Unfortunately, though, because of the color of his skin, he was never able to dine there.\u00a0 So, I had invited him down to dine with me.\n\u201cHe reminded me of my offer that day, and the last thing he said to me was \u201cWe\u2019re going to keep that date; and we\u2019re going to taste that bean soup.\u201d I only wish we could have kept that date.
