Cedric Richmond, D-LA and U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, today announced the availability of $3 million in homeland security grants for the New Orleans area. This funding is provided through the FY 2014 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Appropriations Act and will go toward protecting critical infrastructure and improving emergency management capabilities in Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes. The grant will help state and local authorities and private-sector partners prevent terrorist attacks, fight illegal immigration and trafficking, and respond to natural disasters and other emergencies.

The grant is allocated through the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI), which assists high-threat, high-density urban areas in building enhanced and sustainable capacities for preventing, mitigating and responding to acts of terrorism.

“I’m proud to announce $3 million in Homeland Security grant funding is being allocated to make the Greater New Orleans area more secure,” Rep. Richmond said. “New Orleans received by far the most funding of all the cities that were excluded last year. This is a sign that the Administration recognizes how important our area is in the fight to protect the Nation. From my post on the Homeland Security Committee, I will continue to make the case to the Administration why funding to secure our region, including our ports and waterways must be a national priority.

“Louisianians have seen firsthand how important comprehensive disaster preparedness is to protect our communities and save lives,” said Sen. Landrieu. “Today’s grants would ensure that New Orleans has the resources necessary to prevent or respond to terrorist threats, catastrophic events and potentials disasters whether they are natural or manmade. The funds would also protect New Orleans’ critical infrastructure that the entire country depends on to produce energy, seafood and economic growth. It is a priority for me to make sure Louisiana receives essential preparedness funding.”

“Additional homeland security funding for the Greater New Orleans area is essential to securing our city and positioning the region for continued economic growth,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “Thanks to the leadership of Senator Landrieu and the entire congressional delegation, we will now have access to additional resources and enhanced ability to protect local assets, like our port, that are critical to the entire nation.”

Sen. Landrieu works closely with DHS leadership to expand their understanding of urban security in Louisiana. She continues to advocate for additional funding for the Greater New Orleans area to cover the important economic and security impacts that our port infrastructure brings to Southeast Louisiana. Through these efforts, DHS has a more accurate understanding of the security needs of our urban areas across the country, especially along the gulf coast.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
http://richmond.house.gov/press-release/richmond-landrieu-announce-3m-homeland-security-grants-new-orleans
