Dana Rohrabacher and Sam Farr, both Californians, on Monday saluted congressional colleagues for including their co-sponsored medical marijuana amendment in final passage over the weekend of the government funding legislation, now on its way to President Obama\u2019s desk.\nThe amendment would require the federal government to respect state sovereignty over medical marijuana, depriving the Department of Justice of taxpayers\u2019 dollars to prevent states from carrying out their medical marijuana laws. Thirty-two states and the District of Columbia are listed in the amendment as having legalized marijuana or its ingredients for medical purposes.\nThe bipartisan amendment had a dozen co-signers \u2013 six Republicans and six Democrats.\nRohrabacher, a Republican who represents coastal Orange County, said, \u201cThe enactment of this legislation will mark the first time in decades that the federal government has curtailed its oppressive prohibition of marijuana and has instead taken an approach to respect the many states that have permitted the use of medical marijuana to some degree.\u201d\nFarr, a Democrat who represents California\u2019s Central Coast, said, \u201cWhen the House first passed this measure back in May we made headlines; today we made history,\u201d said Farr. \u201cThe federal government will finally respect the decisions made by the majority of states that passed medical marijuana laws.
