U.S. Representative Todd Rokita (IN-04) issued the following statement after President Obama officially vetoed H.R. 1735, the National Defense Authorization Act, (NDAA):\nIt is shameful that the same President who fought Congress to fund Irans terrorist army is now fighting Congress to defund the United States Military in order to gain leverage for his increased spending demands.\nThe negotiating team worked hard to fight for programs that benefit the military and address our out of control spending, said Rep. Rokita.\nAs a conferee, Rep. Rokita helped negotiate a number of reforms to address our military entitlement programs. Examples of spending reform include troop pension fixes that reduce government expenditures by approximately twenty-percent, while still offering flexible, market-based retirement benefits to a larger number of veterans.\nThe Presidents veto reinforces that the President is not about leading our troops, but continuing to drive our country into the ground with unsustainable debt and an uncertain military future, added Rokita.\nSince it was passed over fifty years ago, the NDAA has only been vetoed four times. In each case, the President objected to an actual provision in the bill and each time, the Armed Services Committees were able to find a compromise that earned the Presidents signature. This is the first time that a President will sacrifice national security by vetoing a bill that provides pay and benefits for our troops to merely further his political agenda.\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://rokita.house.gov/press-release/rokita-%E2%80%93-presidential-veto-dishonors-our-troops-and-thwarts-entitlement-reform"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8957800455391407, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
