These accounts, which would be similar to current 529 college savings accounts, would grow tax-free and are intended to supplement long-term disability expenses of severely disabled children. Families with disabled children have long needed a vehicle to ensure adequate care for their children in later years after parents and other direct decision makers have either passed on or are no longer able to make decisions related to the beneficiary\u2019s care.\nStatement by Ros-Lehtinen:\n\u201cMany families with disabled children discover how difficult it is to plan for their child\u2019s adult years, especially when parents and other decision makers are also grappling with their own health care needs later in life.
