AAFES announced in 2010 that the 1,120-square-foot troop store was to undergo a 5,000-square-foot expansion, with construction to be completed in 2013.\nLate in the bid process, however, the Navy which controls the land, required that an Explosive Safety Survey be performed due to the possible presence of unexploded ordnance.\nIn June this year, the Department of Defense Explosive Safety Board provided final safety approval for construction support on the property and the expansion project can now go forward.\nThe project is currently out for bid with proposals due onOctober 29. Once awarded, a one-year construction period will follow.\nThe existing store, which serves about 4,000 active and reserve servicemembers, retirees, and their families, is small, deteriorating, and in need of a major overhaul.
