On the one hand, higher interest rates will reward folks who work hard and plan for the future with higher returns on their savings and less price inflation. On the other hand, the Congressional Budget Office projects that the interest payments alone on our $20 trillion national debt will go from $255 billion this year to $830 billion in 2026, becoming the second largest category of the federal budget behind automatic spending for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. In that vein, these staggering numbers ought to underscore the larger issue of addressing our debt, deficits, and spending issues before we reach the point of no return.
