Sewell (D-AL) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a $3.7 Million loan to the City of Birmingham to revitalize the Powell School Building.\nIntegral Group, a local developer, will use the funds to acquire the building which is a vacant former schoolhouse. The building will be converted into 24 units of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. The property is located in a state-designated redevelopment area in northeast of downtown Birmingham.\nI am thrilled that this award will play a vital role in redeveloping downtown Birmingham. This project will create opportunities for economic development and bring much needed attention to the area. I applaud the efforts of local leaders who have joined together in ensuring that we address deteriorating and blighting structures in the Magic City. Rep.
