I was proud to support this bipartisan legislation which reauthorizes the water resources program of the Army Corps of Engineers. WRRDA is good for our nation and for New Jersey’s 8th District. It will keep Army Corps projects moving forward and it contains important reforms to ensure a larger share of money, generated for harbor maintenance by New Jersey’s ports, stays in New Jersey.
Also this week, I co-hosted a Congressional Briefing with Global Health Technologies and my colleague Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) to raise awareness about the need to advance global health research to combat infectious diseases. Infectious diseases, rising rates of drug-resistance and other health conditions, still claim the lives of nearly 9 million people across the globe each year. To combat these emerging threats, Congressman Diaz-Balart and I have introduced H.R. 1515, the 21st Century Global Health Technology Act. This legislation would promote the development of health products that are affordable and easy to use in low-resource health systems. H.R. 1515 supports USAID’s current efforts by codifying a long-term program to continue research and development of critical health technologies. I’m proud to know that by supporting this bill, Congress will help to make an immeasurable difference in the lives of people around the globe.
Lastly, I joined a meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan to discuss important and timely issues that affect the U.S.-Pakistan relationship. Among the many issues discussed, my colleagues and I spoke specifically about the Pakistani security forces’ counter-terrorism efforts and protecting the rights of Christians, Hindus and all ethnic minorities living within Pakistan.
Thank you for reading my Washington Review.
