Stivers introduced the bipartisan legislation with Congressman Tim Walz (D-MN).\r\n\u201cGovernment accountability is important now, more than ever,\u201d Stivers said.\u00a0 \u201cThis legislation will allow for increased oversight of an agency that has been given broad authority.\u00a0 It is important that we take the necessary steps to ensure the CFPB is accountable to the American people.\u201d\r\nThe CFPB currently has very little Congressional oversight. The agency is not subject to the appropriations process, receiving funds for their budget from the Federal Reserve, and the CFPB does not have an independent, Senate-confirmed Inspector General (IG). \r\nInstead, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau shares an Inspector General with the Federal Reserve. The IG of the Federal Reserve is an unconfirmed position appointed by the Fed Chairman.\r\nStivers\u2019 legislation amends the Inspector General Act of 1978 to establish an independent Inspector General for the CFPB. The position would be appointed by the President and then confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate.\r\nThere are currently more than 30 federal departments or agencies that have an independent IG.\r\n -30-", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://stivers.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=364520"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9290669113397598, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
