Susan Brooks visits Marion", "2015-12-13", "2015", "2015-12", "Republican", "House", "IN", "Susan Brooks", "B001284", "susanwbrooks.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Susan Brooks is a busy woman.\nThe U.S. Representative serving Indianas Fifth District, which includes Grant County, has made national news since taking her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013 with the Hillary Clinton Benghazi email scandal, as well as just recently being elected to the GOP Steering Committee.\n\n\tI was pleasantly surprised to get the most votes, Brooks said.\n\n\n\tBrooks visited Marion Saturday, first to give a keynote speech at the Marion National Cemetery and then to eat lunch and talk to local leaders, such as Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold, at the newly opened Country Cake and Bakery on N. Washington St.\n\n\n\tTomorrow, shell watch the Colts face off against the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars and maybe finally start her Holiday shopping. Itll be a brief, fun day before heading back to Washington D.C. for federal budget talks that hope to avoid a government shutdown.\n\n\n\tThe shutdown is just one of the many topics Brooks has tackled recently.\n\n\n\tBrooks supported the passage of the bi-partisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which gave states more control over education standards and accountability than the federal government and also received support from most local superintendents.\n\n\n\tI think both sides of the aisle saw that No Child Left Behind was not working, she said. It wasnt improving the skills that our young people needed. A lot of the federal regulations, I believe, were stifling innovation. I talk about Marion and applaud them because they are the prime example of local innovation and turnaround.\n\n\n\tIn some cases, like ESSA, Brooks stances have received support from Democrats.\n\n\n\tIts refreshing to see Congress come together in a bipartisan fashion and solve some of todays problems for our countrys education system. With the Every Student Succeeds Act, states can still have access to the critical grant that would help establish statewide Pre-K programs, John Zody, chairperson of the Indiana Democratic Party, said in a statement.\n\n\n\tOther times, her stances have brought harsh criticism from the left. Such is the case of the Benghazi hearings, which faced criticism from many Democrats, including infamously from Democratic Presidential Candidate and self-avowed democratic-socialist Bernie Sanders in a presidential debate.\n\n\n\tBut whether its education, or promoting more education around heroin, opiate and prescription drug use and abuse, or national security and combating terrorism either overseas or here at home, Brooks said she will continue listening to and protecting Americans.\n\n\n\tIn my view, the safety of the U.S. people is the most important job we have, she said.
