Susan Brooks met with dozens of mental-health professionals Thursday to get input on a proposed House bill that would bring sweeping changes to the nation\u2019s mental-health system.\nThe Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act proposes changes to the nation\u2019s mental health system by focusing programs and resources on psychiatric care for patients and families most in need of services.\nThe 135-page document was written and sponsored by Pennsylvania Rep. Tim Murphy, who worked for three decades as a psychologist.\nBrooks, a co-sponsor of the bill, said the proposed legislation would bring major changes to how the mentally ill and their families receive treatment.\nThe bill proposes increasing access to inpatient psychiatric care, clarifying privacy rules for families of the mentally ill and promoting alternatives to long-term inpatient care, such as court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment.\n\u201cIt\u2019s an important document, and it\u2019s the first time the mental-health system has been given this much attention in a very, very long time,\u201d she said Thursday.\nPsychiatrists, social workers, professors and officials with mental-health agencies from across the state met with Brooks to discuss the bill and pinpoint how the federal government can streamline its mental health programs and services.\nBrooks said Congress likely won\u2019t vote on the bill this year because of the November elections.\nBrooks is the U.S. representative for Indiana\u2019s 5th district, which includes Greentown and Tipton.\nCarson Gerber can be reached at 765-854-6739,\u00a0carson.gerber@kokomotribune.com\u00a0or on Twitter @carsongerber1.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://susanwbrooks.house.gov//media-center/in-the-news/rep-brooks-holds-mental-health-roundtable"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.77596097253263, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
