Deutch and Sarbanes Lead 113 Members in Call to Drop Controversial Campaign Finance Rider", "2015-12-03", "2015", "2015-12", "Democrat", "House", "FL", "Ted Deutch", "D000610", "teddeutch.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Today, U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch (D-FL) and John Sarbanes (D-MD) led 113 Members of Congress on a letter to House and Senate leadership in an effort to fight back against an attempt to include a controversial campaign finance rider into this years omnibus spending bill.As negotiations over the omnibus agreement continue, we urge you to resist any attempt to include a controversial campaign finance provision relaxing political party coordination limits, the Members wrote. This change would be a travesty coming on the heels of last years erosion of the limits on big donor contributions to the parties. Americans have a right to expect that political parties and candidates will answer to them, but this change in the law would only further surrender the party apparatus to the influence of millionaires and billionaires. Moreover, the 114th Congress has not held one hearing, commissioned a single study, nor investigated in any serious way the impacts of changing the current coordination rules governing political party spending. We owe it to the American people to ensure that any proposal to change our campaign finance laws be subject to deliberative study and public debate. U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch & John Sarbanes are both members of the House Democracy Task Force. Deutch is the author of the Democracy for All Amendment (H.J. Res 22 in the House, S.J. Res 5 in the Senate), which would overturn Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United v. FEC and McCutcheon v. FEC and establish a constitutional right to limit money spent in elections.
