Despite good intentions, No Child Left Behind failed to provide students the quality education they deserve. In an effort to address these flawed policies, both the House and Senate passed separate bills to reform Kindergarten through 12th grade education, which resulted in a final proposal from the Joint Conference Committee. Today, Wednesday, December 2, 2015, the House of Representatives considered and passed S. 1177, theEvery Student Succeeds Act, a proposal approved by a House and Senate Conference Committeewhich will replace longstanding principles of No Child Left Behind.\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n Following the vote, U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) stated, One of my priorities in Congress is ensuring our nations youth receive a quality education. Regardless of race, religion, income level, age, geographical location, or learning ability - everyone should have access to a strong education. He continued, I believe the one-size-fits-all approach to education often favored by those in Washington only interferes with our local schools. The legislation passed today, will cut red-tape tying the hands of local educators and will give parents and teachers the resources and flexibility they need to ensure every student receives the best education possible. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives took a significant step to usher in a new era in public education, said National Education Association (NEA) President Lily Eskelsen Garca. As a result of todays vote, we are now on a path to ensuring every child has equal opportunity to a high quality education regardless of ZIP Code. We applaud Rep. David Valadao for getting the job done and doing what works for students, educators, and public education. \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\nHighlights of S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) include: \r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n Makes sure the unique needs of students learning English as a second language are met by providing easier access to funds and grants\r\n Prohibits federal government from interfering in state and local decisions regarding accountability and school improvement\r\n Maintains statewide assessments in grades 3-8 but gives states the ability to innovate their own assessments\r\n Eliminates Common Core Testing Standards and allows states and local school districts to eliminate assessments that do not contribute to student learning\r\n Ends federal mandates on teacher evaluations\r\n Makes sure teachers in high poverty areas have more resources and funding to assist their students\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\nFor more information, please visit www.edworkforce.house.gov/k12education/.\r\n \r\n \r\n Congressman David G.
