Absent an agreement, NIH will face another round of sequestration cuts in January 2014. \u00a0During the first round of sequester cuts NIH\u2019s budget was \u00a0cut by $1.55 billion, resulting in about 700 fewer research projects being funded.\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe following Senators signed the letter: Begich, Blumenthal, Boxer, Brown, Burr, Cantwell, Cardin, Casey, Coburn, Collins, Donnelly, Feinstein, Franken, Gillibrand, Hagan, Heinrich, Heitkamp, Hirono, Tim Johnson, Kirk, Klobuchar, Landrieu, Levin, Manchin, Markey, Menendez, Moran, Murphy, Pryor, Reed, Rockefeller, Schatz, Schumer, Shaheen, and Warren.\r\n\u00a0\r\n\u201cThe investments we make in the National Institutes of Health go directly to saving lives and creating jobs,\u201d Senator Cardin said. \u201cWe cannot afford further cuts to NIH that will impede the progress we have made in combating debilitating and deadly diseases. \u00a0\u00a0More than one-third of the United States Senate has come together to make a common sense, bipartisan plea for investment in the health of the American people and of our economy. \u201d\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe full text of the letter can be seen below: \r\n\u00a0\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Honorable Patty Murray\r\nChairman\r\nSenate Committee on Budget\r\n624 Dirksen\r\nUnited States Senate\r\nWashington, D.C. 20510\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Honorable Jeff Sessions\r\nRanking Member\r\nSenate Committee on Budget\r\n624 Dirksen\r\nUnited States Senate\r\nWashington, D.C. 20510\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\nDear Chairman Murray and Ranking Member Sessions:\r\n\u00a0\r\nAs you begin the budget conference with your House counterparts, we ask that you maintain a strong commitment to funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).\u00a0 The NIH plays an important role in advancing our understanding of human health, supporting innovation, and investing in the field of biomedical research.\u00a0 It is vitally important to ensure that our Nation remains at the forefront of medical research by continuing to support the NIH\u2019s work.\u00a0 As evidenced by the bipartisan letter to the Committee on Appropriations that we authored earlier this year, which was signed by more than half of our colleagues, there is broad support for medical research, and particularly for the NIH, in the Senate.\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe NIH offers our best hope for treating or curing debilitating diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and so many other illnesses that American families battle every day.\u00a0 The NIH supports research in all fifty states, through nearly 50,000 competitive grants that support hundreds of thousands of researchers across the Nation.\u00a0 NIH-funded research has contributed to an increase in lifespan over the last century of nearly 30 years and according to the NIH, has added an estimated $3.2 trillion annually to the U.S. economy since 1970.\u00a0 Cancer deaths are falling about one percent each year, with each percentage point decline saving the U.S. approximately $500 billion a year.\u00a0 According to the NIH, it is estimated that each dollar invested in the NIH generates $2.21 in local economic growth.\u00a0\r\n\u00a0\r\nOur investment in the NIH has yielded an unprecedented number of scientific advances that have improved health outcomes and contributed significantly to the Nation\u2019s economic growth. Unfortunately, America is losing ground as the world leader in research and development and researchers are struggling to secure funding.
