{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["http://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=d1969916-f7dc-4fe4-a511-c73ac8d39b93", "Fischer Supports Defense Bill", "2014-12-12", "2014", "2014-12", "Republican", "House", "NE", "Deb Fischer", "F000463", "www.fischer.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON \u2013 U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, today voted in favor of an annual Department of Defense funding bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 89-11.\u00a0 The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which contains a number of provisions championed by Fischer in committee, authorizes defense spending for the fiscal year and sets the policy and priorities for our military. It provides for our national defense, from authorizing combat bonuses for soldiers fighting overseas, to supporting the maintenance and modernization of our nuclear weapons. Fischer released the following statement:\r\n\u201cI am pleased that the final National Defense Authorization Act contains a number of important provisions \u2013 including many I fought for in committee,\u201d Fischer said. \u201cThe compromise agreement bolsters STRATCOM\u2019s missions, helps modernize our nuclear deterrent, strengthens missile defense, and continues to addresses sexual assault in the military. It enables the United States to counter a growing array of global threats and equips our service members with the tools they need to accomplish their missions.\u201d\r\n \r\nFY15\u2019s NDAA includes the following provisions supported by Fischer:Supports STRATCOM\u2019s vital missions and approves the fourth and final portion of funding for construction of its new facility.\r\n\r\nPreserves and strengthens our nation\u2019s nuclear deterrent\r\nContains important increases in funding for missile defense programs\r\n\r\nRenews current prohibition on transferring detainees housed at Guantanamo Bay to the United States.\r\nAuthorizes additional funding to address gaps in training and operations for Special Operations Forces.\r\nContains over 20 provisions addressing sexual assault in the military. Contains much of S. 1917, a bill Fischer wrote with Senators Claire McCaskill (R-Mo.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) Key accomplishments include:\r\n\r\nExtending new protections instituted by the Department of Defense to the military service academies\r\nEliminating the so-called \u201cgood soldier\u201d defense preventing the consideration of general military character for the purpose of showing the probability of innocence.\u00a0\r\nStrengthening the role of prosecutors by allowing them to seek additional review in cases where commanders decide not to proceed to trial.\r\nRequiring the performance appraisals of commanding officers evaluate their handling of sexual assault allegations.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=d1969916-f7dc-4fe4-a511-c73ac8d39b93"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8306233212351799, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
