U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after the Senate voted to override President Trump's veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021 (H.R. 6395).\r\nI was among the first people in Washington to suggest that we remove blanket immunity for Big Tech companies and I was already planning to file a bill early in the new Congress to do that, Rubio said. But if this bill doesn't become law our men and women in the military won't get their pay raise, a new program to take on China won't begin, and the rebuilding of Tyndall Air Force Base in Northwest Florida will be delayed. We don't have to let these important priorities die in order to deal with Big Tech. We should let this become law and then move to deal with the outdated and undeserved special treatment social media companies receive.\r\nEarlier this week, Rubio announced he would introduce legislation to maintain Section 230 protections for small businesses and companies that protect free speech, but remove the blanket immunity for Big Tech companies that engage in certain moderation, selective distribution, or content development activities.\r\nIn June 2020, Rubio, along with Senators Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), and Josh Hawley (R-MO), requested that the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) take a fresh look at Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and clearly define the criteria for which companies can receive protections under the statute.\r\nLater that month, Rubio and Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), along with Senators Mike Braun (R-IN), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), introduced the Limiting Section 230 Immunity to Good Samaritans Act, which would prohibit Big Tech companies from receiving Section 230 immunity unless they update their terms of service to operate under a clear good faith standard and pay a $5,000 fine if they violate those terms.\r\nAfter the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021 (H.R. 6395) earlier this month, Rubio released a list of critical policy victories for Florida and the nation:\r\n \r\n\r\nDecember 14, 2020: Rubio Secures Provision in Defense Bill to Better Manage Coast Guard Assets\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 11, 2020: Rubio, Coons Praise Passage Of Their Bipartisan Bill To Strengthen U.S.-Israel Strategic Alliance\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 11, 2020: Rubio Secures Provision in Defense Bill to Combat Financial Crime by Ending Anonymous Shell Companies\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 11, 2020: Rubio, Warner Secure Critical 5G Provisions in Defense Bill\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 9, 2020: Rubio Secures Critical Provisions for Northwest Florida Military Installations in Defense Bill\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 9, 2020: Rubio Secures Provision to Sustain P-8 Fleet at NAS Jacksonville\r\n\r\n\r\nDecember 9, 2020: Rubio Secures Provision to Address DOD Supply Chain Dependence on Foreign Pharmaceuticals in Defense Bill\r\n\r\n\r\nJuly 23, 2020: Rubio Applauds Senate Passage of 2021 National Defense Authorization Act\r\n\r\n \r\n  \r\nRUBIO VOTA PARA APOYAR A LAS TROPAS, PRESENTAR REFORMAS A LA SEC. 230\r\nWashington, DC - El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL) emiti el siguiente comunicado despus que el senado votara para anular el veto del presidente Trump a la Ley de Autorizacin de Defensa Nacional (NDAA, por sus siglas en ingls) para el ao fiscal 2021 (HR 6395).\r\nFui de las primeras personas en Washington en sugerir que eliminramos la inmunidad general para las empresas de Big Tech y ya estaba planeando presentar un proyecto de ley al principio del nuevo Congreso para hacerlo, Rubio dijo. Pero si este proyecto de ley no se convierte en ley, nuestros hombres y mujeres en el ejrcito no obtendrn un aumento de sueldo, no comenzar un nuevo programa para enfrentar a China, y la reconstruccin de la Base de la Fuerza Area de Tyndall en el noroeste de la Florida ser retrasado. No tenemos que dejar morir estas importantes prioridades para tratar con Big Tech. Deberamos permitir que esta legislacin se convierta en ley y luego actuar para lidiar con el tratamiento especial, el cual est desactualizado y es inmerecido, a las empresas de redes sociales\".", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://www.rubio.senate.gov//public/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=54ECD42D-C41F-48C2-B034-CBBD2E9B20D1"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.5299750957638025, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
