This grant will allow counties to increase the rent subsidies to low income, elderly, and disabled residents currently receiving HCV assistance who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.\r\nFamilies should not have to worry about being evicted in the midst of a public health emergency, said Senator Schatz, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This grant will help some of our most vulnerable residents make rent and stay in their homes while we ride out this pandemic.\r\nThe HCV program provides federal dollars to help subsidize rent payments for about 16,500 low income, elderly, and disabled voucher holders in Hawaii. These subsidies cover up to 70 percent of a recipient's rent.However, some beneficiaries of the program have recently lost their job because of the pandemic and can no longer afford to pay their share of rent after the subsidy. This surge in unemployment has resulted in rising rental costs for public housing authorities  and this grant will cover the increase in subsidies as well as cover increased administrative costs.\r\n\r\nThis funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and was authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.\r\n\r\nThe total allocated to each public housing authority is below:\r\n \r\nHawaii Public Housing Authority: $707,968\r\nCounty of Hawaii: $538,316\r\nCity and County of Honolulu: $1,126,482\r\nCounty of Maui: $423,813\r\nKauai County Housing Agency: $207,790\r\n \r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["http://www.schatz.senate.gov/press-releases/schatz-hawaii-set-to-receive-more-than-3-million-in-federal-funding-to-help-low-income-families-elderly-disabled-make-rent-during-covid-19-pandemic"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.1434387415647507, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
